Sedation Dentistry

Did you know that millions of Americans suffer from some level of dental anxiety that prevents them from seeking the care they need? Whether you’ve been avoiding the dentist for years out of fear, or you just wish there was a way to make your appointments more comfortable, we want you to know you’re not alone, and we’re here to help. Sedation is also a wonderful solution for patients who otherwise have trouble receiving dental care including those with a bad gag reflex or a physical disability. With sedation, you’ll come in, relax into a waking dream-like state, and your appointment will be over before you know it, and you can leave with a smile knowing you made the right decision to come see us.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a service offered and used during extensive procedures, for patients with dental phobia, and for patients that have a sensitive gag reflex, or aversion to the smells and sounds of dental technology. There are different types of sedation, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, oral sedatives and general anesthetic.

With sedation, you can get all your dental work done comfortably in a single visit.

“I would like to say that this quaint dental office is the best in Maricopa, for this small town there is an excess number of dentists and it can be hard to choose. I have severe anxiety when it comes to dentists and I got lucky I found them, to be honest there office is hard to see and not much advertising like those other big names in town. So I want to be sure to put a good review on here so others know too just how amazing Dr. Taylor and all the staff there are! they are nice, gentle and accommodating. The office is state of the art with tvs in the room in front of the patient and above on the ceiling to view while you are either staring straight ahead or lying back getting your teeth worked on. They are also the only dental facility in town Accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A rating take a look at some of the others and you will be surprised some have an F with many complaints!” – Alia Z.

Which type of sedation
is right for me?

Nitrous oxide is most commonly used to calm an anxious patient, and is the lightest form of sedation. You will breathe in a combination of nitrogen and oxygen gas at the start of your appointment to help you relax. You will drift into a euphoric dreamy state, and your appointment will be over before you know it. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly so you should be able to drive yourself home shortly after.

Oral conscious sedation has a heavier sedative effect and is used for patients with more moderate to severe anxiety or other problems with dental care. Oral sedation comes in the form of a prescription pill you can pick up at your local pharmacy, and take about an hour before your appointment. You will need to arrange for transportation to and from the office to ensure your safety.

General anesthetics may also be used when a more invasive treatment is called for. Procedures that may warrant sedation include: fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments.

Sedation Can Help With…

  • General dental phobia or dental anxiety
  • Fear of dental tools or the drill
  • Fear of the sights & sounds of the dentist
  • Fear of blood or needles
  • Bad gag reflex
  • Physical disability
  • Small mouth, jaw pain or TMJ
  • Trouble sitting still
  • Uncomfortable with personal space
  • Embarrassment of oral health

Is Sedation Safe?

The American Dental Association endorses sedation dentistry as an effective way to make patients comfortable during their dental appointments. It’s important to tell your dentist about any medications or medical treatments you are receiving before using a sedative or anesthetic. Your dentist will talk to you about the sedation process and give you pre- and post-sedation instructions before administering any sedative or anesthetic.

Sedation is a safe and highly effective way to help patients with dental anxiety or other specific dental needs get the care they need, comfortably.
